Are you heading home for the summer? The thought of carting all your belongings with you can be daunting. Luckily, storing your things over the summer period can be easy and affordable if you do it right. We’ve put together the ultimate guide to student summer storage, to ensure that your summer is smooth running and stress-free.
Before you can think about storing your belongings, you will need to have a thorough sort through everything you own, as essentially you don't want to pay extra to store the things you don't use. Organise things into piles, allocated ‘keep’, ‘throw’ and ‘donate’. You may find that some of your clothes or shoes haven't been worn for months, and would be better off in a charity shop. Once everything has been sorted into separate piles, you can remove anything that is prohibited from being stored. Generally you cannot store dangerous goods, as well as food and plants.
Before your move into storage it’s important to ensure that your belongings are ready. Check that everything is in a good condition, which means washing and drying everything you wish to store, to prevent mildew.
Once your items are clean and ready to go, it’s time to start packing. Use high quality boxes and/or crates to store your goods to ensure they are safe and secure. Here are some of our top tips:
For delicate items, wrap them tightly in bubble wrap and use a fragile sticker.
Pack heavy items at the bottom of the box.
Try not to overfill boxes, and leave a couple of inches of space at the top.
Label each box carefully so you know the exact content.
Once you have a clear picture of what you wish to store and how much space you will require, it’s time to select the correct unit to house your items. If you only need to store a few items throughout summer, you may wish to opt for a secure locker or smaller unit size. If you have larger items, such as furniture, a larger unit would be best for your belongings. Some facilities also offer drive up units for easy access.

When travelling to the storage unit, ensure your boxes are stacked carefully. You may find that hiring a van will be beneficial, or with Easistore you can make use of our free van service.
When organising your unit, stack heaviest boxes at the bottom and lighter boxes at the top. You should also aim to put boxes you will use sooner closer to the front, making them more easily accessible.
Once everything is packed safely in your unit, lock it up and leave it to the storage company. Now it’s time to enjoy your summer without worrying about your belongings at uni.
