‘Out of Office’ is a new feature that takes a look at how one of our team likes to spend their time away from Easistore. In this edition we caught up with Tunbridge Wells' Assistant Manager, Nigel Harris, to find out a bit more about his involvement with the local Spa Valley Railway.
I’ve always been interested in trains since travelling on them for family holidays as a child. I had visited the Spa Valley as a passenger a few times since moving to Tunbridge Wells 18 years ago, but 2 years ago I went down to a new members open day and I’ve been hooked ever since.
The railway runs for five and a half miles through the Kent and Sussex countryside, starting from the old Tunbridge Wells West Station goods yard. I could be down there every day of the year as we’ve got so much to do, but I spend most Sundays down there.
I can be found doing quite a few different jobs on the railway, including Station Master, Guard and Ticket Inspector. You will also find me down the line manning a level crossing, which we share with the mainline railway that runs from Uckfield into London.
We’ve got loads of events planned- Sunday lunches, days for the kids, the Annual Summer Diesel Gala, Santa Specials and my personal favourite; the Autumn Beer Festival which combines two of my favourite hobbies trains and beer!
