Here are a few moving home tips to help you along the way...
One month to go...
- This is a good time to see if you will need a self storage room during the moving process. You may decide to move some of your items into storage in advance of the move to make things easier on the day or to temporarily create more space in your new home while you redecorate when you first move in.
- By contacting Easistore early we can help with any enquiries and advise you on which packing materials you are likely to need. To view a selection of the moving supplies we sell in store and to buy online, visit our Box Shop.
- Ring around for a few quotes from different removal firms before you appoint one (see our Recommended Removers) and make sure they are properly insured and establish exactly what they are prepared to do before you give them your business. We can recommend reputable local removal and van hire firms whom our customers regularly use and trust.
- Order your packing materials. Remember, if you buy a storage pack from us, we will deliver it to you free of charge.
- Start packing any non-essential items such as out-of-season clothing, together with your best china, glassware and ornaments. Mark the contents clearly on the side and the top of the boxes so that the details can still be seen on a stacked box.
- Clear out your loft, garage and shed if you have one.
- Advise your friends, family and any business associates of your new address and the date of your move. If your move hasn't already become a talking point, this is likely to prompt your friends and family to offer you their own valuable tips on moving home.
- Arrange to have post re-directed to your new address - there's always someone you will overlook when you send out your change-of-address notes!
- Keep all correspondence from your Estate Agent, your Solicitor and the removals company safely together for easy reference.
- Contact the companies who insure your building and contents and arrange your cover to be transferred to your new home – as applicable, to commence on the day you move in.
Two weeks to go...
- Review the progress of your moving home checklist.
- Start running down food stocks in your freezer.
- Continue to pack any items you won't need before the move.
- Arrange for someone to look after your children and pets during the move.
- Contact your gas, electric, telephone and water suppliers to inform them of the impending move.
One week to go...
- Review the progress of your moving home checklist.
- Double-check the booking you've made with your removal firm.
- Keep your vacuum cleaner, dusters, polish, etc, unpacked for that last once-over.
- Cancel any newspapers, milk and window cleaning and settle any bills you may have overlooked. If you have any subscriptions, advise the suppliers of your new address and move date.
The day before...
- Prepare a moving day 'survival kit' containing your essentials, such as a kettle, mugs, tea, coffee, milk, sugar, teaspoons, sandwiches, snacks, biscuits, crisps, fruit, washing-up liquid, tea towels and a hand towel (not forgetting a toilet roll or two!).
- Pack all your valuables together (such as jewellery) and carry them securely with you.
- Keep the file containing all valuable documents relating to the move with you at all times in case you need to refer to them.
- Advise the telephone company of the time you want your telephone disconnecting (or the number transferring, if you're keeping it).
- Defrost the freezer and fridge (if you intend to transport the freezer and its contents intact, put it on fast-freeze overnight).
- Make a list of useful telephone numbers for the new occupiers of your home, plus instructions for operating any appliances, central heating, etc.
- Make sure you have cash available for the unforeseen circumstances and for tipping your removal men.
- Telephone your insurance company to double check that your new contents cover will be in force at the time of the move.
The morning of the move...
- Telephone the gas and electric companies to give them your final meter readings.
- Pack the rest of your belongings:
- Use good quality storage boxes. We sell cardboard and plastic boxes
- Fill boxes to capacity - as partially full or bulging boxes may tip or collapse
- Heavy items should be packed into small boxes so that they are easy to lift
- Label or number boxes for easy reference when you need to locate your goods
- Make up an inventory of your stored items and keep it in a safe place at home
- Protect your fragile goods in bubble wrap
- Dishes and glasses should be wrapped in tissue paper or bubble wrap before storing
- Garden equipment should be cleaned before storing
- Wrap table legs with bubble wrap before storing
- Wardrobe boxes allow you to store your clothing on hangers which keeps their shape
- Always place a protective cover over your soft furnishings
- Organise your storage space:
- Place heavy or bulky items in the room first to provide a good stacking base
- Plan your storage space - put those items that you need to get to most often near the front, close to the door
- To maximise space stack similar sized boxes together
- Do not place heavy items on sofas or mattresses
- Stack chairs seat to seat with cloth or paper to separate them
- Leave refrigerator or freezer doors open for ventilation
- Pictures and mirrors should be wrapped in mirror boxes, marked fragile and stacked on their end
- Avoid stacking or leaning furniture against outside walls to aid ventilation
- Cover your goods with dust sheets to protect against dust
If you find yourself in the unfortunate situation that you’re unable to get into your new home contact Easistore and we will be able to give you a short term storage solution.
